Role Responsibilities

Head Coach Responsibilities

  • Plan the program activities yearly and weekly, and keep written lesson plans
  • Attend all program meetings
  • Orient assistant coaches and program assistants to the program
  • Ensure athlete and volunteer attendance is taken and recorded
  • Assign coaches to athletes
  • Evaluate the program regularly with input from the assistant coaches and athletes
  • Communicate with the sport coordinator or program committee
  • Recommend training needs for coaches within the program if necessary
  • Assist the program committee in completing regular program reviews
  • Assess athletes’ potential to move to another level of participation
  • Arrive at practice at least 15 minutes before practice begins
  • Appoint an assistant head coach to take charge of a practice if the head coach is unable to attend
  • Ensure that all athletes are registered
  • Complete all required forms by the deadlines given
  • Collect registration forms and fees for tournaments and hand these in with the appropriate documentation on a timely basis
  • Ensure that sport rules are taught and adhered to
  • Ensure that good sportsmanship and good conduct guidelines are followed by all athletes and volunteers
  • Complete an incident report for all emergencies and/or incidents
  • Notify all athletes and volunteers if a practice is cancelled
  • Ensure that an up-to-date inventory is kept and that equipment adheres to safety standards
  • Request in writing, equipment or repairs to equipment
  • Be certified in Level I NCCP and Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Delegate responsibility to assistant coaches (warm-ups, skill instruction, paperwork).
  • Head Coaches report to the Program Coordinator

Assistant Coach Responsibilities

  • Implement practice plans developed by the Head Coach
  • Evaluate athlete progress and make recommendations to the head coach
  • Assist with set up and organization of each practice
  • Actively participate with athletes during practices
  • Participate in program evaluation
  • If unable to attend practice, notify head coach in advance
  • Supervise athletes at practice
  • Attend tournaments where possible and be responsible for assigned

Program Assistant Responsibilities

  • Implement practice plans developed by the Head Coach
  • Evaluate athlete progress and make recommendations to the head coach
  • Assist with set up and organization of each practice
  • Actively participate with athletes during practices
  • Participate in program evaluation
  • If unable to attend practice, notify head coach in advance
  • Supervise athletes at practice
  • Attend tournaments where possible and be responsible for assigned (not provincial, national or world level events)

Special Event Volunteer Responsibilities

The resposibilies varies depending on event, but in general.

  • Required to confirm volunteer position when confirmation email is sent out
  • Show up 15 minutes prior to event to register
  • Stay for duration of their shift, unless there is an emergency or otherwise stated to the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Respect FOIP and cannot post photos of the athletes on Social Media
