Do you have an hour a week to spare?
Volunteers are the backbone of Special Olympics Edmonton. Without volunteers, Special Olympics would not exist. They provide technical support for all the sport training programs and competitions, administrative support services and host fundraising events. Currently, there are over 300 volunteers registered with Special Olympics Edmonton who are responsible for a wide variety of services. As a volunteer you will have the wonderful opportunity to share the experience of a lifetime with our athletes!
How You Can Help!!
Volunteer opportunities within Special Olympics Edmonton exist in coaching, special events, fund raising and other support activities. Volunteers have access to training opportunities to assist in acquiring knowledge in a specific sport in order to work with individuals with an intellectual disability. In general there are three areas to volunteer.
1. Sports Programs and Competitions
These can be either on-going sport clubs or one-time special events. The types of positions available are: 3 levels of coach (Head Coach, Assistant Head Coach, coach); team manager; timer; official/referee; driver; meet/tournament coordinator or volunteer.
Sport Programs:
Athletics, Aquatics, basketball, Bowling (5Pin, 10Pin), curling, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Floor Hockey, Indoor/Outdoor Soccer, Alpine, Cross country Skiing, figure skating, Snowshoeing, Snowboarding,
Youth programs: Active start, FUNdamentals, Indoor/Outdoor Soccer, Basketball

2. Special Event Volunteers
There are many roles and duties that a Special Event Volunteer can do and the rewards are great. Special Events volunteering is a great opportunity for people who want an introduction to Special Olympics and for individuals that want to be involved on a casual basis.
Examples of Special Events are the EPF ½ Marathon, the Track and Field Tournament, the Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournament, the Bowl for Special Olympics, the DARE Run, and The Law Enforcement Torch Run activities like “Wal-Mart Sit” and Cops and Crepes
Each Special Event will have particular volunteer needs and an orientation will be provided so volunteers know what to expect and what to do
3. Administration
These positions generally require less sport technical knowledge. The administrative positions mostly deal with activities that affect the organization and operation of the affiliate. These volunteers would have less involvement with the athletes. These positions may include:
Chairperson, Vice Chair, Secretary, Finance Coordinator, Public Relations, Fundraising Coordinators, committee or sub-committee supports, and Telephone Support Persons. The Chair and/or other members of the Affiliate Management Committee may be involved in its sub-committees.
The time commitment required by each position is dependent on the position and the number of sub-committee volunteers who are involved. We request that volunteers make a commitment of 2 years if possible to the committee and the required tasks, in order to give continuity to the projects. In addition to the monthly meetings, we have a planning session scheduled in the spring.
Fundraising
Volunteers are needed to help organize fund raising events, and/or help at the event. SOE is involved in various activities such as the Bowl for SOE, Wal-Mart Sit, Edomonton Police half Marathon, poker night and raffles.
