Register

It’s here – the first official step of registration for the 2020-2021 program year!. There are changes to our process. There is one big thing we know for sure and that will take some getting used to for all of us: our programs WILL look very different while COVID remains a factor in our lives, this is our new normal and will take some getting used to.

Special Olympics Alberta, and thus Special Olympics Edmonton, will be working with the cohort system within our organization. The primary change associated with this guideline will be that athletes can only participate in ONE program at a time. The 2020-2021 program year will be split into three seasons: Fall/Winter, Spring, and Summer. You may select a maximum of one sport for each of these seasons. This means you can not register for both bowling and floor hockey, for example, because they are both in the Fall/Winter season.

This year’s registration process will have the following steps detailed below:

STEP 1: Complete the Intent to Attend form
STEP 2: Receive the Confirmation of Sport
STEP 3: Registration (more details to follow)

STEP 1: The first step to become an athlete for the 2020-2021 program year is completing an Intent to Attend form. This form will tell us which sport you want to participate in during each season. This step is mandatory to register as an athlete.
To fill out the form, Click Here

Please complete this form by Monday, August 24 @ 11:59pm MT. We will open a second form for late intents and new athletes based on remaining spots, once athletes from the first submission have been notified. To secure a spot in your programs of choice, it is VERY important you fill this form out before the deadline.

This is NOT an official registration – official registration will be held later in the year. A submitted intent does not guarantee that you will participate in that program for the 2020-2021 program year. Programs will have capacities that we need to adhere to – this is why it is important that you indicate more than one choice. The priority for Special Olympics Edmonton this year is to provide as many people as possible with an opportunity to participate in sport. Sport selections will be based on returning athlete status (returning to a sport registered in during 2019-2020), number and type of sport choices, and interest in and capacity of programs. We will try to accommodate athlete preferences as much as possible.

You need the following information to complete the form:
Only ONE submission will be accepted per athlete, so please answer the form carefully.

STEP 2: Wait for Confirmation. Special Olympics Edmonton will carefully review the submissions once the deadline has passed and make determinations based on the factors earlier in this email. For any athlete that has submitted to attend Provincial Games, this is the same process we use for Games. You will be notified of the sport you are to register for following this process. If for any reason we are unable to fulfill your request for your chosen sports, we will contact you to discuss.

STEP 3: Register! You will receive further information on when and how to register for your sport once it is confirmed. We ask that you please be patient during this process, as it will take time. No decisions will be made around the program you are selected for until after the deadline of this form. We will do our very best to accommodate the preferences of each individual athlete, while preparing to run a successful and safe season.

The 2020-2021 program year will bring many changes, some known, and many unknown. Please be prepared that your sport program may look different from what you are used to, and changes to programs will be on an individual program basis. Known changes:
Possible changes, pending the finalized ‘Return to Play’ plan and government recommendations:
You will be contacted with all the details pertaining to your confirmed sport, once your confirmation has been sent and registration is initiated.
