Special Olympics Edmonton is a non-profit, volunteer based sport organization that provides recreational and competitive opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Coaching

The Coaching Association of Canada, through their National Coach Certification Program, has been improving the effectiveness of coaching across all levels of the sport system. Special Olympics believes in providing learning opportunities to our volunteers, to ensure that our athletes benefit from the best possible experience.

We recommend that all of our Special Olympics volunteers attend one of the Special Olympics workshops offered through NCCP. You can choose between a Community Based Programs workshop and a Competition workshop.

Standard First Aid & CPR clinics are also offered regularly by Special Olympics Edmonton for our volunteers.

Coaches attending Provincial Games are required to obtain certain certifications, as determined by Special Olympics Alberta. Currently, the certification requirements are:

Sport Specific Technical Training

All Head Coaches attending Provincial Games are also required to be certified in their chosen sport. Typically the minimum requirement is Level 1 Trained. Currently many Provincial Sport Organizations are undergoing changes to their certification processes. Please contact the SOE office if you would like more information on what is required. If coaches are interested in taking a sport specific coaching course, please go to the sports Provincial Sporting Organization to see when courses are available.
