Become a Volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone of Special Olympics Edmonton. Without volunteers, Special Olympics would not exist. They provide technical support for all the sport training programs and competitions, administrative support services and host fundraising events. Currently, there are over 300 volunteers registered with Special Olympics Edmonton who are responsible for a wide variety of services. As a volunteer you will have the wonderful opportunity to share the experience of a lifetime with our athletes!

Head Coach

Role Description: The Head Coach is responsible for the planning, implementation and continuity of a Special Olympics program.

Time Commitment: 3-4 hours/ week

Qualifications:

  • Have assisted with sport specific program for longer than one year
  • First Aid & CPR Certified
  • NCCP Level 1 Certified
  • Police Record Check
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Opportunities

  • Can apply to be on the program committee
  • Competition and travel to local tournaments, provincial, national and world games

Assistant Coach

Role Description: Assistant Coaches will work directly with the athletes to implement the practice plans and to ensure that the skills of the athletes are developed within the program.

Qualifications:

  • Have assisted with sport specific program for longer than one year

Special Event Volunteer

Time Commitment: Event specific: on average 4 – 8 hours per event.

Qualifications:

  • Specific to each event. Volunteers may be required to have specific qualifications depends on the event being run.

Opportunities

  • Can apply to be on the special events committee
  • Volunteer Coordinator can sign or write volunteer hour forms or letters
